Apple Pay vs Google Wallet vs Tap to Pay
Yesterday I was out with the family at a restaurant and when it came time to pay, the server asked if I wanted to pay “with Apple Pay”. I was just a tiny bit bothered since I use Google Wallet. I asked “why didn’t you call it “Tap to Pay” or something?” What he said surprised me!
“In a day, I might have 50 people tap and 49 of them will use an iPhone!”
Wow, I had no idea! I thought the split was in the realm of 50-50 iPhone vs Android users!
I did some googling and browsing Reddit threads and there’s no consistency to who uses what, so I’ll assume that it really is a fairly even split but there are geographic and social pockets of each system. Weird!
generally I think apple users have a lot less personal understanding of security. They trust apple is keeping them safe, and so are willing to use newer financial technologies. Android users are a little more pragmatic and dont trust our phones to do payments. You might be in the (I think small, as evidenced by this server’s comment) group of people who are using android, but are ok with modern financial transactions.
basically, the split of “I want something that just works, and is easy” vs “I should be careful about technological choices, even if it means some reduced functionality”
I will definitely say that I’m glad most of the folks in my family use apple products, as I wind up getting asked much less for tech support
the bank that handles my direct deposit from work has an android app… but you wont find it on my phone.
I mean…. I want it to “just work” as well. I just want it to work the way I want it to work. Heh!
