Staples Rebate class action lawsuit

In the last couple years, I’ve submitted about 10 Staples rebates and Staples hasn’t honored about 4 of them. And dammit if they don’t know exactly which ones I neglected to make photocopies of all the originals. Well I’m fed up.

If you’ve had a similar experience, then write to me and we’ll see what we can do about starting a class action lawsuit.

update:   I submitted a $30 Logitech QuickCam webcam rebate on 1-11-08 and got the check today, just 2 weeks later on 1-23-08. Pretty impressive

I have made 3 attempts to have Staples honor a $100.00 instant e-mail rebate on aCompaq Presario V2000. Numbers don’t match…. Going to the store where I purchased it later this week before I allow you to let me join you in a class action suit. Seems it is a regular practice as the net is full of unhonored rebates from Staples. I’m behind you so far.

Several years ago, when I had enough, I did the following:
Wrote a letter to the Attorney General of California with a copy to the Corporate CEO. Got a response within days, and resolution. Won’t help the other guy, but will help you.

  3. Lee says:

Well, it doesn’t look like we have enough people to mount a class action lawsuit but yes, a letterwriting campaign sounds like a very effective way of doing things. I have had good luck doing that with other things like defective products.

    thanks

Sent in rebate, everything photocopied and in order. Staples voided my rebate once for no reason. I have called twice and Staples says check is in the mail, but it has been 8 months. Who do I write a letter to and What is the address for Staples HQ???

  5. Lee says:

Sorry, I dunno the address for Staples HQ but it shouldn’t be too hard to find at staples.com or some such. I haven’t dealt with any rebates in a while so my interest in following up has somewhat waned. Good luck!

  6. I am an attorney that works with another law firm in Oregon in the handling of class action litigation. My office is in San Jose California at the time. If you are interested in pursuing the class action please give my office a telephone call and I would be interested in speaking withyou. I handle mostly family law litigation as my daily practice, however both myself and Roy Thompson in Lake Oswego Oregon have been instrumental in obtaining positive results for consumers in class action litigation. Count me in. i’m tired of being ripped off by the big companies that deny all rebates in hopes the consumer will let it drop. I’m out too much money over the years.

  8. Kerry says:

I purchased “Peachtree Pro Acounting” software at Staples. The Staples ad stated that the software would be free after “rebates”. The store printed out two rebate forms, one for $50 and one for $90. I submitted everything per instructions and they are telling me my $90 rebate is invalid and can only honor the $50 rebate. This is a bunch of crap!

Best Buy is another store that is bad obout honoring rebates. Three rebates that I have submitted were supposedly never received.

Add me to the list of horror stories with Staples Easy Rebate/Parago. Purchased Turbo Tax/Intuit on 1/23/07 which was confirmed same day. To date no rebate in sight after numberous e-mails back and forth. Is there someone out there who is willing to protect consumers against such unethical practices? I suspect there are thousands of unpaid rebates at Parago.

  10. Bianca says:

Since my post earlier today, I went to Staples store where I purchased the qualified rebate item. Spoke with, and shown all the e-mail correspondence, to the store’s manager. The Manager gave me no hassle, no problem. He issued me a rebate store credit within minutes. Of course, I did raise my voice a few decibels so that all customer within 10 feet could hear me.

For me, at least, happy ending. Still, Parago should be dealt with.
    Possibly shut down.

If you want to send a letter to Staples HQ the address is
    500 Staples Drive
    Framingham, MA 01710

Sent it to the attention of Jay Bailter, I believe he one of the top guys. Ron Seargent is the Pres/CEO. Make sure that you say retail purchase in your letter.

  13. Paul says:

I have done many easy rebates and they come back in about 4 weeks.
Nt sure why everyone is so pissed off!. I once bought a anti-virus and had to send in to manufacturer and it took about 4 months to get rebate, not to mention wasting my time to send multiple emails.

Anyone with problems with a rebate from ATS? American Telephone Service? Waiting 6 months and all they say is we are behind.

I have done many rebates with Staples and the only problem i had was that i forgot to enter some info. Once i got ahold of them, it was fixed and my rebate was “in the mail”… I think a lot of people complaining about the rebates must be those trying to “work the system”. If you follow directions, you will get those dollars… If you are trying to use a loop hole or play an angle, then i don’t think you deserve any money anyway !!!! You people just end up costing the rest of us money.. Use your talents for something good and LEGAL ….

  17. lisa giavani says:

If you follow all of the directions you will get your rebate. However if thru your own fault you delete some information then well guess what you’re not getting your rebate!!

  18. Jim Nichols says:

Staples Headquarters are in Framingham, Mass. Staples rebates are handled by a Promotions Firm called Parago Corp. in Texas. I too have been shafted on a promised rebate for tax prep software. My “Easy Rebate” application was duly acknowledged Feb. 5. No rebate has been received now; and it’s five communications with them and six months of waiting. I have filed complaints against Staples with the MA Attny. General and against Parago Corp. with the TX Attny. General. I suggest everybody with a complaint does the same. AG’s tend to ignore singular complaints, but require an investigation when an obvious pattern emerges.

  19. former employee says:

I’m a former employee of Staples. I worked there for two years. I’m not justifying the fact that it takes so long to get your rebates back. But they are very particular in the way you fill out your rebates. If you’re having trouble receiving yours.. Take it into the store and most managers will help you. or offer a comparable solution. But, please don’t come in yelling at innocent employee’s we are not the ones giving you the problems it’s just our place of employment!!! I cannot tell you how many times i was yelled at over these things. and quite frankly it just makes you look like an ass. Yes there is a solution but if you speak to the managers they are usually the ones with the answers

  20. xxtipper says:

    Just another update.

Since my last post i have done 3 “easy rebates” and all 3 went smoothly. I think a lot of the upset shoppers are directing their frustration with Staples when a lot of these rebates are through the manufactor of the product. I think this is why Staples has turned to the “easy rebate program” but some manufactors want to handle their own rebates..

    good luck all,

  21. Mike says:

To the employee who used to work at Staples, you may not like being yelled at, but when you represent a company that doesn’t do what it is suppose to you’d better get used to it. Staples has promised me my $20 rebate now for 3 months and I have yet to see it. Tell me why I shouldn’t be upset. They make it impossible to talk or correspond with anyone other than their rebate people. They’ve broken their promise to me at least a half dozen times. Each time it is it will go out in 15 days. It will go out in 15 days. I’m done with Staples as should everyone else.

  22. Don says:

jeez why should “everyone else” be done with staples? if you dont like it, you dont have to shop there. if youve had a bad experience just dont go. ive had nothing but positive experiences there and will continue to support them. i’m much better off there than office depot or office max.

  23. Mike says:

I’m glad you’ve had positive experiences there. I have had them in the past also. What I and others are saying is they don’t honor their commitments on the rebates. If you want to go there go ahead. Just be very wary of anything with a Staples Reward attached to it.

  24. Jack says:

I am also in the long list of staple dishonor. I bought a chair and several products under staple brand with rebates in Black Friday 2009. After 6 months, I did not get any rebate back so far. I do get the reply for the chair’s rebate stating that the product limit got exceed. The chair has limit 1 per household, and my family only bought 1 chair, so what do they mean by the product limit got exceed? I do not think mailing time was the issue because i had completed and mailed the rebate form as well as other require materials right after the purchase. Personally, I think it is best for me not to buy anything from staples that requires mail in rebate because i simply do not trust their rebate program.

  25. Liza91 says:

I am a an assistant manager at Staples. I have been helping customers with their rebates for over 6 years with 100% success rate, as long as the customer has kept a copy of their rebate paperwork. If you ever have an issue receiving a rebate for a product you have purchased from Staples, go into the store and ask to speak with a manager. Have copies of your rebate information with you. We can summit a request on your behalf. You should get your rebate in about 15 days. Hope this helps.

  26. David Langer says:

I just spent almost an hour at my local Staples. I am attempting to discover what became of my $40 and $50 rebates which where submitted 12/2/09. I waited 10 minutes to speak to a manager who did not respond to several pages. A clerk came and listened to my situation. The clerk fiddled with a terminal for 10-15 minutes and walked away. He returned 15 min. later to explain that the manager said that nothing can be done at “Staples” that I should talk to my mailman. I asked the clerk, What in the world does my mailman have to do with my Staples rebates? He responded that this is the advice that the manager wanted to relay to me. After some discussion the clerk found an ” e-mail rebate question site” which we sent an inquiry on my behalf. I need to wait several days for a response. We will see what happens. I expect to someday to speak to the store’s manager if I can locate her.

  27. Kathy says:

I have also been ripped off by staples rebate. I will never go to this store again. So much for easy rebate. I did my rebate online, got the message that everything went fine, waited 10 weeks and nothing!!! I called HP and at least they were decent and I will be able to get my $50 from them but my $100 visa from staples…Ha. They conveniently couldn’t find my application in the system and the deadline for the promotion is over. I would never have bought this computer without the offer of the rebate. Don’t shop at Staples.

  28. john jorgansen says:

I purchased several items at Staples and despite several attempts to recover—–
FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS——YES THAT’S FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS IN REBATES. They
had an excuse why they didn’t go tha class action lrough. It’s a good thing I saved a copy
of each one, showing I had mailed in, everything they needed for the rebate PERFECTLY.
Staples just got into awsuit for cheating their employees BIGTIME,
in overtime wages. STAPLES IS AS CROOKED, CROOKED, CRIMINAL, AS IT COMES!
DONT EVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM. THEIR COMPUTER TECH SUPPORT DEPT IS ALSO A
RIPOFF RIPOFF RIPOFF!!!! NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH STAPLES. THEY ARE A FILTHY OUTFIT!!!!

  29. lee says:

I submitted a Staples rebate for a ream of paper in February. I never got the rebate (surprise surprise!). I checked online at stapleseasyrebates.com and they didn’t have my rebate request. I called 877-266-6483 as mentioned on the website, spoke to a guy named Kevin who was generally unhelpful. Kevin told me to send my claim to staples.rebates@parago.com. I emailed them with photocopies of my receipt and an explanation. Happily, they sent me my $19 rebate.

    It wasn’t worth the hassle.
