Regarding the engineering pr0n link: my friend Geo has a friend who lives in Brooklyn, and has a 110 year old warehouse. The warehouse has a 110 year old water supply. The 110 year old water supply has no cut-off in the street. So when the FOAF wanted to cut off the water to his building, he found out that he was going to have to pay the water utility many benjamins to turn off water to the entire neighborhood, then install a building cut-off.
He decided against that.
He did the engineering calculations, then got his own liquid nitrogen, carefull froze the 6″ or 8″ incoming water pipe (working from one direction towards an open faucet), then cut through the pipe, and quickly bolted on a cut-off, turned it off, and then did the rest of the work.
