New Long Distance

saveonphone.com recommended ECG long distance so I switched. I’ll tell you in a couple months if they are any good.

Installed WP-DB-Backup 1.7

The old backup program had some issue when I moved servers. This one doesn’t have any issues. I didn’t install the very latest 1.7, I installed a slightly older one because it wasn’t compatible with WP1.5

Incredible Art/Science

Ned Kahn

I’ve seen some of his pieces in San Francisco. Wow.

Where to park near the Dover NJ NJ Transit train station

dover-train
Use the large triangular parking lot to the left. The train station is just above and to the right. The train and station is on Dickerson St. (If this map doesn’t work any more, look for “50 S Morris St, Dover, NJ 07801”. Across the street to the west of it is a large parking lot. 50 yards to the north and then 20 yards east is the Dover train station.)

Note that most of the spaces are “Monthly Permit only”. Some of them are 12 hour meters. It’s like $3 for 12 hours. The lot closes at 10 or 11pm… They don’t close the gate but you might get a $30 parking ticket after that time.

If you plan on getting there late and staying late, you might be better off with street meter parking near the station… though I haven’t tried that.

Subscribe to Comments Upgraded to 2.0.7: Not

Subscribe to Comments Upgraded to 2.0.7.

Update: Oop. Subscribe to Comments 2.0.7 is broken. I’ve disabled the feature til I can get it working again.

Update: I rolled back to a previous version of Subscribe to Comments because WP 1.5 doesn’t support… I forget.. something or another. And I’m not upgrading to 2.0 for a while.

Investments I’m happy with

How should I invest my money? Here is what I’ve got right now. Could I do better? I prefer to monitor my investments a few times per month.

Key
L long term investment (I’ll check on this every couple months and reconsider my investment)
L+ I highly regard this long term investment (I’ll leave my money here for a long time and not think about it)
S short term investment (I watch it every few weeks and might get out if there is a dramatic change)
S+ I highly regard this short term investment (I think I have a ‘pick’ here)

S+ Paypal Money Market – Currently earning 5.03%. Not FDIC Insured. Money markets very rarely lose more than 3% a year (making it a pretty safe, if low interest investment)

L+ BRK.B Berkshire Hathaway has dramatically outperformed the S&P 500 consistantly for 40 years, earning an average of 20% interest/year vs the S&P’s 10%

S JDSU – JDS Uniphase – makes very high bandwidth data transmission gear and other things.

L STZ – Constellation Brands – large worldwide wine, beer and liquor producer

S+ UARM – Under Armour – sports apparel maker. They are getting big fast and are in the process of getting into thousands of shopping malls in America. Be warned that apparel makers often have very tight sales margins and don’t usually do spectacularly

L NFLX – Netflix – They do DVD’s by mail better than anyone else. Walmart hasn’t done well against them in the market, which says a lot

L UPS – UPS – shipping stuff for the new mail order universe

L FDX – Fedex – shipping stuff for the new mail order universe. I’ve been told that I should only invest in one parcel company and that should be Fedex. That sounds shortsighted to me.

L TXT – Textron – they make golf carts, helicopters, small planes and lots in between

L+ TREMX – T. Rowe Price Emerging Europe & Mediterranean Fund – a mutual fund that has done well in the long term comprised of smaller European and Mediterranean companies.

L FLR – Flour Corporation – a competitor to Halliburton.

L ESLR – solar panel manufacturer

L BTU – Peabody Energy – coal mining company

L DNA – Genentech – a large Biotech company

L GILD – Gilead Sciences – They make a “one a day” tablet for AIDS patients instead of the 20 pill regimine they used to have to take

L+ MON – Monsanto – makes genetically modified crops

Flying Spaghetti Monster-ism

As part of my religious conversion to Pastafarianism, I have made a t-shirt design.

Buy a t-shirt from me or just steal the image and put it on your skateboard. If you make serious money off it, you are obligated to tithe to both the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and me. Or his noodly appendage will find you!

WP-Cache upgraded

Dreamhost has been running kinda slow recently. So I took the time to figure out why my wp-cache wasn’t working. WP-Cache is a WordPress plugin that caches database calls so that WordPress runs way faster. Instead of it doing about 60 database queries to fetch all the blog info, it looks in the cache and if the page has already been created, it serves it as a flat text file.

It didn’t work correctly… The first time I’d go to a blog page, I would see a blank page. The second time it worked fine. I found some advice in a comment on the author’s website to fix this problem.

The advice is:

To fix the blank page issue modify wp_cache_ob_end() in wp-cache-phase2.php to use ob_end_flush() instead of ob_end_clean(). Works for a setup using PHP 5.1.2, MySQL 5.0.18, WP 2.01 and WP-Cache 2.0.17.

So I went to the wp-cache-phase2.php file and changed

ob_end_end();
if ($new_cache) {

to

ob_end_flush();
if ($new_cache) {

It works :-)
I’m running wp-cache 2.0.17 on WordPress 1.5.2
