Subject: Challah Bread

Here's my recipe. It's good even if you're too lazy to take the dough out & braid it. :) Just add poppy seeds to the mixture at the beginning.

Challah Bread for the Bread Machine

  • 3/4 cup plus 1 Tablespoon water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3 1/4 cup bread flour
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 Tablespoons cold water
  • poppy seeds

Carefully measure all but last three ingredients and place into bread machine pan in order recommended by manufacturer.

Select dough cycle.

Grease large cookie sheet. Place dough on lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 13 inch rope. Place ropes close together on cookie sheet. Braid gently and loosely (do not stretch while braiding). Pinch ends to seal and tuck them under the braid. Cover and let rise in warm place about 45 minutes or until double.

Heat oven to 375. Mix egg yolk and cold water; brush over braid. Sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
