"Tell me about NERO."
NERO is a live action fantasy roleplaying game that blends
elements of the Robin Hood legend, Lord of the Rings, and King Arthur
tales. It started in the late '80s in the Boston area, expanding
quickly over the past few years. Right now the New England chapters
have about a thousand members. There are many other chapters all over
the United States. Usually one or two hundred people show up at each
Adventure weekend which consists of =constant= play time from Friday
evening until Sunday afternoon! NERO's gaming system is designed to
allow little supervision of the players so that action is always taking
place, even without Marshals (our 'Game Masters') present. It is set in
a medieval atmosphere and proper costuming is encouraged but not
required. Our world is a monarchy with nobility, with good and evil
battling at all levels. There are sword fights with boffer weapons,
skills like trap disarming where your actual ability with scissors and
tools is all that might keep you alive, and magic spells thrown with
"spell packets"; if you incant the spell properly (IE "I call forth a
Flame bolt!") and hit the target with the spell packet, the spell works.
If you miss with either, the spell fails!
To go on an adventure, you must pay for a membership. If, however
you are unhappy with NERO Ashbury in any way, you can get a full
refund.
When we are not having Adventure Weekends, we are running Adventure
Days at our site in Brooklyn. You can go with five friends on an adventure.
The adventure (or "module" as we call it) usually lasts about two hours.
Before and after your adventure, you are welcome to frequent our tavern,
The Dragon's Flagon. The tavern is lavishly decorated and everything that
happens inside actually occurs in our fantasy world! Members and
non-members alike frequent the tavern every weekend. If you live close
by, come by some weekend. It is a great way to find out more about us.
We are open every weekend except when holding an Adventure Weekend
so please call first.
